As you know, I absolutely LOVE photographing babies. I love the way they change so quickly over the course of just weeks and months, as they learn to giggle, grab their hands and feet, and begin to sit up on their own. These milestones are fleeting moments that I encourage every mother to document and treasure forever.

Along with their growth through these milestones, however, many babies become much more aware of strangers and will cling with all their might to their mama. This can make for a challenging photo session…but only if you are not prepared.

Fortunately, my process for photographing even the most challenging of babies will still guarantee amazing, beautiful results.

What is my process for photographing shy babies?

I ALWAYS include mom in my baby milestone sessions. If baby only wants to be held by mom, why not include her? Moms have access to all of my beautiful dresses in my studio wardrobe, so they don’t even have to think about what to wear. With this option, mom can hold, play, bounce, tickle, snuggle, kiss or dance with baby without ever having to set him down alone (where he doesn’t want to be!). Even if mom doesn’t particularly want to be in the photographs, her lap and arms can make for excellent props.

The style in which I photograph lends itself to natural and authentic interactions, so the shy baby doesn’t have to *perform*. The genuine connection between mom and baby will create images you’ll look back on and think, I remember when he used to belly laugh every time I nuzzled his cheek. Photographing shy babies is no problem at all because mamas are always included!
