I’ve seen this quote attributed to C.S. Lewis, but recently I’ve read that it is from a doctor named John Trainer.
No matter who said it, this quote is one that has strongly resonated with me recently and one that I’m determined to remember and turn back to this year.
Do you know what God has called you to at this moment of time in your life? Maybe you just had a sweet newborn baby, and God has called you to be up at wee hours of the night feeding, rocking, snuggling, and changing the endless number of diapers. Maybe you’re a single mama and God has called you to work full time to provide a loving home and food on the table for your children. Maybe God has called you to be the amazing mother for children in desperate need of one through foster care or adoption.
At this moment in time, I know what God has called me to: teaching, training, parenting, and discipling my children. My baby just turned eleven. My oldest is a sophomore. Their short time left at home has become increasingly real to me and I’m here to make the most of it. So instead of thinking that my children are the distraction from more important work, I need to remember that they are my *most* important work.
I have so many goals and dreams for my photography business, but most of them require my time and attention full time. That is not something I’m willing to do…YET. One day, but not yet. In the meantime, I’ll keep serving and giving the best photography experience to the limited number of clients I can take on at one time and keep planning and dreaming of what will one day come. I’m in no hurry, though, as the time left with my kids at home will be gone in the blink of an eye. They are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work.
